From Craft to Community: Where Stories Meet Commerce

This August, something special is happening at the intersection of creativity and community. Hatch and Kita are joining forces as part of The Good Weekend—an SG60 flea market celebrating Singapore's National Day in a way that truly matters.

Taking place on 9 & 10 August at The Foundry, a social impact space housed in the historic former Elections Department building, this isn't just a marketplace—it's a gathering that showcases how thoughtful agency building creates sustainable livelihoods through local crafts.

We're part of a curated lineup of purpose-driven local brands, changemakers, and conscious consumers who believe in doing good while having a good time. This event serves as a bridge connecting aspiring micro-entrepreneurs with community partners like Rainbow Centre and the broader ecosystem that amplifies local makers and their stories.

More Than a Market

What makes this collaboration unique isn't just the handcrafted items you'll find, but the intentional ecosystem behind each stall. As part of The Good Weekend's mission to celebrate Singapore through supporting local people, stories, and small businesses, every product represents a journey—from personal passion projects to sustainable micro-businesses that support entire families.

This is agency building in action, where individual creativity meets community support to create lasting change. The event embodies Singapore's spirit where tradition meets innovation and community comes first, featuring sustainable products, handmade crafts, heritage treats, and unique finds—all created with a mission to give back.

Meet the Makers

Tiny Forest Folk (Charmaine)
Available on 9th and 10th August

Former social worker Charmaine brings her professional understanding of mental wellness into beautifully crafted illustrations and toolkits. Her work makes mental well-being strategies accessible and practical, transforming complex concepts into tools that anyone can understand and apply in their daily lives. Each piece reflects her commitment to making mental health support more approachable and actionable.

Asher Knots (Bela)
Available on 10th August

What started as a single mom's journey to create something beautiful for her baby has blossomed into a micro-business that shares handcrafted love with the world. Bela's mastery in crocheting began with making plushies for her child, but her skill and passion have grown into creations that bring joy to families everywhere. Her story exemplifies how personal moments can evolve into sustainable livelihoods.

Poetry by Nur
Available on 9th August

Words have power, and Nur channels the stories of those in her life into a collection of poems that resonate with universal human experiences. Her work captures the essence of community storytelling, where individual narratives become shared wisdom and connection points for others.

The Micro Business Academy Connection

This flea market also highlights the innovative Micro Business Academy (MBA), a pilot program designed to create meaningful work and income opportunities for young adults who have graduated from SPED schools. The program requires at least one family member to dedicate time to growing the business, recognizing that sustainable micro-enterprises often thrive with family support.

Through coaching and strategic partnerships, MBA provides families with a safe space to explore business ideas and develop the skills necessary to sustain them. It's not just about selling products, it's about building confidence, creating independence, and fostering economic empowerment within the community.

Building Sustainable Ecosystems

The partnership between Hatch and Kita demonstrates how collaborative approaches can amplify individual efforts. By facilitating connections between makers, community organisations, and customers, they're creating a sustainable ecosystem where local crafts become vehicles for broader community development.

This isn't just about buying handmade goods—it's about investing in stories, supporting local economies, and participating in a model that prioritises people over profit margins. When you purchase from these makers, you're contributing to a system that values creativity, supports families, and strengthens community bonds.

Join the Movement

Visit us this August 9th and 10th at The Foundry to experience firsthand how craft becomes community. Meet the makers, hear their stories, and discover how your support contributes to sustainable livelihoods and stronger local networks.

Expect interactive booths, community activities, and delicious food and drinks—all with a strong focus on inclusivity, culture, and impact.

This National Day celebration invites you to slow down and soak in the spirit of Singapore, where every small purchase or conversation makes a difference as we build a more caring, connected future together. When you purchase from these makers, you're contributing to a system that values creativity, supports families, and strengthens community bonds.

This event is supported by the Social Space and The Foundry by Majurity Trust. For more information about the Micro Business Academy program or to learn about our participating micro-businesses, visit us at the market or connect with us online.
